Placement Exams

Today we found out the results of yesterday’s placement exams and which classes we’re assigned to. I made level “I,” which is just below average I think. There are two levels beneath I and maybe three or four levels above I. Honestly I thought I did much worse than this; I think it’s a good place to start.

Tomorrow morning is the first official day of classes. While we won’t have any sessions, we will be having a kanji placement examination. The Japanese program here consists of two main classes for Japanese: grammar and kanji. I think it’s great that these two things are taught separately because it’s very possible to be at different levels in Japanese grammar and not know many kanji ― for example somebody who’s one their way to fluent conversational Japanese and never spent much time reading and writing.

Tonight I’m studying hard on many kanji that I’ve forgotten their meanings. Studying on my own, I always placed more stress on knowing the meaning of kanji as opposed to the reading of it. The exam will surely test our reading abilities.

まだまだ勉強が足りない。
