Working Class

Lee and I were approached the other day about the possibility of working for the school as English teachers. Since I won’t be graduating at the end of this semester, I can’t take the job; but Lee is and can.

This was presented at the time when we have placement tests, our good friend and Resident Assistant Akiko is about to leave (I’ll write about this later), and we’ve never really sat down and worked out aspects of what’s happening next year with each other. Great timing!

Description of the job:

  • One-year contract, renewable.
  • ¥3,000,000 per year (roughly $27,000).
  • Free accommodation.
  • “Arrival bonus” of ¥50,000 (roughly $450).
  • Thirty-five hours per week, 9:00 – 5:00, but only eighteen actual hours of time in the classroom, the rest of the time is free.
  • Paid holidays.

The job is basically boring as hell unless you have something to occupy your thirty-five hours every week, you’ll go absolutely crazy as the teaching aspects of the job - I’m sure - are ridiculous and repetitive.

The short of it is that Lee plans on turning down the offer as it’s a waste of her time and while the money is good, in the end it just isn’t worth the trouble. She’s a history major graduate going on to do her masters.
